How to get to Ulva

 

  • From Craignure, it’s about a 45-minute drive to Ulva Ferry. The last 9 miles from Salen follow a scenic single-track road beside Loch na Keal and the Ben More, Mull’s own Munro (a mountain over 3.000 feet). You also need to watch out for animals – sheep, cattle and sometimes deer, walkers and cyclists -  on the road. It can be slower during busy times, so allow a little extra time.

    Ulva is car-free, so vehicles must be left on Mull. There’s daytime parking near the ferry.

    The car park consists of some electric hook-up points - thanks to the Mull and Iona Community Trust (MICT).

  • There is a regular public bus service that runs from Craignure to Tobermory via Salen that is run by West Coast Motors, that coincides with the CalMac ferry services on most days.

    From Salen, there is an option to book the Ulva Ferry Community Transport run by Mull and Iona Community Trust, but bookings must be made in advance, as this can be very busy during the high season.

  • If you’re arriving by sea, there’s a peaceful 8-berth pontoon at Ulva Ferry with power, water, red diesel, WiFi, and toilets. Mooring is managed by Mull and Iona Community Trust (MICT), and fees apply depending on boat size.

    Kayaks and small boats can launch from the Ulva Ferry slipway. Please avoid using it when fishing boats are working, as access is needed via the road.

    On the Ulva side, you’re welcome to land in front of the Boathouse Restaurant. Please don’t moor on the slipway unless you’ve checked with the ferryman first—it’s used by the ferry.

The Ulva Ferry

The foot passenger ferry from Ulva Ferry to the Isle of Ulva is run by local ferryman, Rhuri Munro.

  • From 1st April to 31st October, the ferry runs on demand between Monday and Friday, from 9am till 5.30pm. No need to book — just turn up and go!

    Although the ferry usually also operates on Sundays through the summer months, this service is not running in 2026. The community will review Sunday sailings ahead of the 2027 season.

    The ferry does not operate on Saturdays.

    Sailings are weather dependent and can change at short notice. The ferryman will always make the final decision on whether it is safe to sail.
